Looking for Irish music in Boston on a Saturday afternoon/evening?

July 312009

I am taking my mother-in-law and father-in-law out to see Boston on Saturday and they want to hear some Irish music, preferably while having a few pints. Any ideas where we could go? Afternoon would be best, although early evening would be OK. They’re from Ireland originally so it needs to be authentic!

How to plant fruit on animal crossing city folk?

July 312009

Posted in folk | 3 Comments »

On Animal Crossing City Folk how do you plant fruit. I know you dig a hole and put the fruit in, but does it have to be planted in a special area? Like the coconut has to be planted on the lower level, so do any other fruits have to be planted in special places? Which fruits and where?
Also i’ve heard about planting money trees. How do you do that?

money tress are a little harder to grow, so i dont know much about them. but the other tress, like the peach and pear and apple can be planted where ever. but like you said the coconut has to be planted in its special place. the rest of the fruit can be planted anywhere.

Can someone give me suggestions on my research paper?

July 312009

Thesis is: Debussy’s experimentation and unconventional ways have revolutionized the art of music, influecning many later composers and sparking new forms of music such as jazz

In the first place, your paper at present is all one paragraph! Yes, as the first answerer said, identify your thesis and state it clearly–and end the first paragraph there. (If the word "jazz" ends the first paragraph, it’s still too long–you have an introduction almost as long as the whole body.)

The beginning is beautifully written, and it would be a shame to take out any of its evocative images. However, to help you get to the point sooner, you COULD save some of those details for a body paragraph or the conclusion. Suppose you break at "daydream and reality" and add a more concrete thesis at that point. Then you can go into the two schools of composition that Debussy participated in and influenced. You might also mention his debt to the Romantic movement.

Now for the mechanics and such:
1. Not "songs based off of," but songs drawn from" or "songs based on."
2. Something seems to have been left out of this sentence: According to One of Debussy’s teachers told him “I am not saying that what you do isn’t beautiful, but it’s theoretically absurd” (Kamien 440)
3. The past tense of "cast’ is "cast"–not "casted."
4. "Debussy’s music can be understood through two important aspects of his music"–a bit repetitious? Why not "of it"?
5. "the main style of which Debussy was attributed to"–On generally attributes a quailty or characteristic or innovation to a person, or credits him for it. So reword this.
6. "Paris was at the hubbub of the revolution" I think you just mean at the hub. (Look both these words up.)
7. "different unlike ever seen before" Insert a comma before "unlike" and the word "anything" after it.
8. "viewed the paintings by the French Impressionists threatening to the “perfect” conventional form of art" Either change "viewed" to "considered" or insert "as" before "threatening."
9. Start a new paragraph with this sentence: "Debussy is generally viewed as an Impressionist, but many art historians claim that Debussy was also a Symbolist . . . . "
10. "Just like he composed music based off " Just AS he composed music based ON (This occurs again a sentence or two later.)
11. "enriched" Why past tense?
12. " Regardless of whether Debussy is seen as an Impressionist, Symbolist" Insert "a" before "Symbolist."
13.."remembered as the pioneer altered the course" "The pioneer WHO . . . ."
14. "A variety of events in Debussy’s life . . . " Start a new paragraph here.

Sorry, but I’m getting tired! In the remainder of the paper, look for logical places to begin new paragraphs. And don’t say "unique to"–it’s "unique among."

What are some good blues/folk songs about World War One?

July 312009

I’m doing a report on World War One and we need to upload a song relating to the war, I wanted to do an old blues or folk song. I was thinking along the styles of Leadbelly, Skip James, or Robert Johnson. Does anyone know of any old blues or folk songs about World War One?

Blues singers seem to have been relatively silent about World War I. I can’t find any blues or folk songs (from the time at least) addressing the war. There was a later song by Eric Bogle called "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" (written in 1970s but it was about WWI).

I’ve linked a list of songs from the war era which were about WW1.

How to find classical music for specific combinations of instruments?

July 312009

Is there a website that allows you to search for pieces of classical chamber music which use specific combinations of instruments?

Note that all I need is the name of the piece and the composer. For example, you might type in "oboe, violin, viola, cello" and get "Mozart: Oboe Quartet In F Major, K. 370" as a response.

Thanks!

Try this website, it’s a bunch of chamber music databases. I haven’t tried it myself, but you may have some luck. www.acmp.net/fcm.shtml

Other than that, try to access the library search engines online of performing arts schools. Some may allow you to search their databases. The Hartt School of Music’s Allen Library has a pretty good search engine, you start there.

Also give the Library of Congress a try:

I’m not of legal age for consuming alcohol, which removes a large amount of bars and lounges, but I was wondering if anybody knew of a nice coffee shop that has live music, preferably jazz.

Celtic Music Society is a unique program comprised of student musicians from East Rochester Senior and Junior High Schools in East Rochester, New York. Founded in the fall of 2001, this group of young musicians performs the traditional music of Ireland in authentic traditional and contemporary styles. In our first seven years, we have performed more than 150 times, released three albums, hosted seven workshops by All-Ireland Champion musicians, and shared the stage with some of the top Irish musicians from our region and the world, including two concerts each by Irish supergroups Lúnasa, Gráda, and Teada. Director Mark Gowman and students in Celtic Music Society frequently present workshops to students, teachers, and college music education majors, and have presented several at the Eastman School of Music and the New York State School Music ociation’s annual conference. Celtic Music Society was one of only four student ensembles from the United States invited to perform at the 2006 National Music Student Leadership Conference in Salt Lake City, where we also presented a workshop for more than 100 teachers at the corresponding Music Educators National Conference.
