Celtic style music on guitar?

September 302009

I have recently been invited to play guitar in a celtic band, and I’ve been wanting to experiment with some chords and keys, so could anyone name me off some commonly used chords, keys, or even specific scales used in celtic music? Also several types of tuning would help too, thanks.

You can look up tab for songs like these @ www.renegadeolga.com. This should give you a general feel for it.

What are some folk bands that aren’t solely acoustic guitar based?

September 302009

Posted in folk | 2 Comments »

I want to start a folk band but most of my friends all play guitar and nothing else. I play guitar, piano, drums, and I’m totally willing to learn a new instrument if needed.

I just need to know of some other folk band that isn’t solely one guy playing the acoustic guitar and singing. I would love to hear some with piano, cause it’s my favorite.

You should totally form some kind of Bob Dylan-style mock-up band. That would be awesome.

I’m italian I need that this text more simple…please!! Can u can do it? I need this immediately?

Cultural Background
During the 1950s, a sense of uniformity pervaded American society. Conformity was common, as young and old alike followed group norms rather than striking out on their own. Though men and women had been forced into new employment patterns during World War II, once the war was over, traditional roles were reaffirmed. Men expected to be the breadwinners; women, even when they worked, assumed their proper place was at home. Television contributed to the homogenizing trend by providing young and old with a shared experience reflecting accepted social patterns.
But not all Americans conformed to such cultural norms. A number of writers, members of the so-called "beat generation," rebelled against conventional values. Stressing spontaneity and spirituality, they asserted intuition over reason, Eastern mysticism over Western institutionalized religion. The "beats" went out of their way to challenge the patterns of respectability and shock the rest of the culture.
Their literary work displayed their sense of freedom. Musicians and artists rebelled as well. Tennessee singer Elvis Presley popularized black music in the form of rock and roll, and shocked more staid Americans with his ducktail haircut and undulating hips. In addition, Elvis and other rock and roll singers demonstrated that there was a white audience for black music, testifying to the increasing integration of American culture. Painters like Jackson Pollock discarded easels and laid out gigantic canvases on the floor, then applied paint, sand and other materials in wild splashes of color. All of these artists and authors, whatever the medium, provided models for the wider and more deeply felt social revolution of the 1960s

More simply, the text is saying that most of American society was conformist, conventional and traditional during the 1950s, with the exception of a few rebels in the arts, such as the Beat Generation in literature, Elvis Presley in music, and Jackson Pollock in abstract art.

I do not agree with that point of view, however. In my opinion, the process of social change was already well begun after World War II, continued to spread and develop during the fifties, and reached a peak in the 1960s. The same television medium that showed quaint suburban sitcoms like Ozzie and Harriet also brought down McCarthyism, validated the growing civil rights movement, popularized genres from science fiction to rock ‘n’ roll, and prepared the ground for the triumph of liberalism in the election of 1960.

What is the best music software to create classical music genre?

September 302009

Hey, I have been using FL since a long time. But, the samples quality is not that good, and it may be good for modern music styles. However, you always feel no matter how much you try it is very electrical. But i need a similar software with high quality samples to create CLASSICAL-like music, similar to the sounds produced by an orchestra. Can you advice me on that? Tx.

The best product is Sibelius 4 with the Kontak Gold add on. However - I use Sibelius and Cubase but connect my PC to good quality Roland sound modules that are more flexible than software generated sounds.

What were the most popular types of Jazz music in the Roaring Twenties?

I know the blues were very popular. How did this type of music influence the culture in the 20’s?

Generally, real jazz of the 1920s which is musically significant is called hot jazz.

This is New York School or Chamber Jazz (Miff Mole & His Molers from 1927, it’s white jazz):

This is Chicago Style (McKenzie & Condon’s Chicagoans from 1927, it’s white jazz):

This is New Orleans Jazz (Monk Hazel & His Bienville Roof Orchestra from 1928, it’s white jazz):

This is so called Symphonic Jazz ( Paul Whiteman & His Orchestra from 1927, it’s white jazz):

This is black jazz from Chicago: (Junie Cobb & His Grains Of Corn, from 1929):

This is black jazz from New York: (Fletcher Henderson & His Orchestra from 1925):

This is black jazz from New Orleans (recorded in Chicago, Omer Simeon from 1929):

Actually, it’s very difficult to show a difference between black jazz from Chicago and New Orleans because many musicians from South Side Chicago were originally from New Orleans who came there after the closing of Storyville.

This is black jazz from Harlem (Luis Russel & His Orchestra from 1929):

This is so called Novelty with hot accompaniment (Annette Hanshaw from 1926):

For the songs you’ll need RealPlayer

Enjoy

Oh, I forgot to tell you that there was race segregation in jazz as well in those days :-(

Where can I find good folk music like Greensleeves?

September 302009

I’m really fond of that song and I would like to hear more folk music from that era of music.

Also, where can I find medieval non-Gregorian chant music?

Greensleeves is a 16th century tune. I have a CD called "Shakespeare’s Music" that has more 16th century music.

As for non-Gregorian chant medieval music, there is quite a bit recorded that is quite good. Try entering "early music", "troubadours" or "minesingers" in the search box in Amazon and you’ll get several pages of hits.

While not completely authentic, one modern band I really like that uses medieval instruments and medieval music as their inspiration is Wolgemut:

Check them out; you might like them, too.
