Do the Irish really like the Irish music we hear in America?

November 272009

Music like Flogging Molly, the Pogues… I hear it in America but I was wondering if they were really popular in Ireland. And what kind of music is popular in Ireland?

I think everyone generally enjoys listening to this music in the pub, but tehre are only a few people who really love it and would listen to it in their own home. Most popular music is the same as Britain or the US, all that stuff in the charts. But you have all styles of music, just like anywhere else in the world. Everyone has their own taste.

What type of music do you like and are you a democrat or republican?

I tend to think that people who really listen to music listen for the ability to relate to a song. I listen to Country, Christian and, and some old time rock and roll because I really feel that these songs hit the closest to home. They mesh with my core values. Do you think that the way you vote has anything to do with the music you enjoy. I mean do you believe that they complete each other well? Please tell me your favorite music and your political affliliation. And if you feel they blend well together?

I love to listen to all kinds of rock. My favorite band is the manic street preachers. They are a socialist band and very liberal but I am a conservative. I love their music even though I may not agree on their political stance.

What are some differences between the music you listened to as a child and the music you listen to now?

1.What’s your favorite kind of music?
2.How do you feel when you listen to this music?
3.Is music an important subject at school in your hometown?
4.What are some differences between the music you listened to as a child and the music you listen to now?
5.How does music affect (or influence) people?
6.Compare the music that young people like and the music that old(er) people like.
7.Does western music have any influence on your country`s music?

1. I like indie/folk or anything that’ll catch my attention. I pretty much enjoy it all.
2. I feel happy, sad, fast, however I need it to make me feel.
3. I’m not in school, so no.
4. I think I grew up a bit. I used to love the pop, fad music. I still love pop, but fad music annoys me.
5. However it lets them.
6. People like the music they listened to when they were young. So, it’s really just the change in the music scene, not the ages of the fans.
7. My country IS the western influence.

What are some good places to start to get into old time folk, bluegrass, and jug type music?

I love listening to folky rock and roll like dylan, the grateful dead, and jefferson airplane. i know that they were influenced by traditional american folk music, and id like to check some of it out. its just that, given this day and age, there arent a lot of people that really know about this kind of music, at least not my age.

I don’t know how old you are, but I am 25 and have been listening to old-time and bluegrass since I was about 14 when my dad introduced me to Earl Scruggs. I don’t think enough young people appreciate this type of music.

Why am i so attached to celtic music soo much?

November 222009

For some reason when i hear Celtic/Irish slow music like clannad, etc, something deep in my blood and soul stirs..i dont know why. I’m from Detroit, MI USA lol… I feel like im part of the music or something. I never knew i loved this music so much. Why could this be?

I’m of Irish descent, so I understand the feeling. I’ve been fortunate enough to attend many reenactment events, hearing music performed on traditional instruments, which makes it even better than most professionals. It’s not necessarily being part Irish, I suppose, since my friend, who is a mixture of Swiss, German and other nationalities is strongly drawn to the music, which I introduced her to. She had been surrounded by polkas and other ethnic music but never Irish/Celtic/traditional.

However, for me it’s not only the slow music but also the jigs and reels. All of it has a hold on me, and I have the CD and tape collection to prove it, as well as a library of music books. I play the bowed psaltery, and those melodies are among my favorites.

I think the majority of people respond to it, some more strongly than others. Riverdance and Lord of the Dance certainly spread the sound though sometimes it’s modernized. But, Clannad definitely has brought fans over.
