What are some Folk songs for children that were written in the 1700-1800’s?

February 122010

I need to find some songs, or a song that was often played or written in colonial America. Circa 1750-1850. The song preferably needs to be a kids song. I was thinking Yankee doodle, but I can’t find what year that song was written. Some one help please!

Row, row, row your boat is English from the early 1500s.
Lavender blue is another really old one.

This Website has compiled hundreds of songs by time period and country this link is to America, scan down to the patriotic songs for yankee doodle - the notes next to the lyrics include the information about when and who wrote the song (1750): http://www.contemplator.com/america/index.html

Good luck

I sing folk songs to a small guitar- to start my professional career should I gig at old folks homes?

January 252010

My best number is ‘There was a lover and his lass, with a hey nonny no and rosemary and thyme’
I follow this with ‘What shall we do with the drunken sailor? Hey nay and up she rises’
I finsih after about two hours with a comic version of ‘Old Jed is dead and so is his daughter, the both drank from the stream they knew they didn’t aughter.’

I think it’s a good idea to do that to give you practice in front of a live audience. Then when your ready hit an open mic. But think of all the joy you’ll bring to the elderly giving them something different in their monotonous nursing home life. Have fun and keep going.

What folk songs in Northern Ireland are accepted by both Catholics and Protestants?

December 42009

I’ve heard that ‘Fenian Record Player’ and ‘Auld Orange Flute’ are both loved by both communities, but what other songs are loved by both sides of the divide?

It does depend on your definition of folk songs I suppose as that can make a difference. There are many republican and loyalist songs which could be classed under the folk genre but neither would be acceptable to the other side.

Then take an artist like Mary Black who would sit under the folk genre and all her songs would be listened to by many people irrespective of their religion. The same would go for many other artists so really all comes down to what you mean by folk songs.

The Green Fields of France is a classic folk song sung by The Fureys and is about the first World War and would be very popular. The Band played Waltzin Matilda done by the Dubliners would be similar.

So hundreds of folk songs are popular depending on what is meant by folk songs.

can you recommend some portugal folk songs ?

November 222009

do not post other genres please. it would be good to hear some nice folk songs from Portugal.. lively ones preferred. thanks

hmmm….i was brought up listening to old fartsy portuguese music cause my parents came from the boat lol but now im drawing a huge blank… jorge ferriera is a big time dude around here but if you just want like basic traditional music then i went on amazon.com and found a compilation cd heres the link: http://www.amazon.com/Portuguese-Folk-Music-Various-Artists/dp/B00002DDJ7/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1252512825&sr=1-1
however if you want a good portuguese rock band, i suggest quinta do bill they got a good style

also, if you want a personal recommendation i like a little of luciana souza shes upbeat
if you want fado you have to get either amalia de riques or christina branco
and if all else fails: theres always the "rei do gado" soundtrack but it may be hard to find considering it was a show in the 90’s
