I am taking irish dance lessons, and I cannot identifiy what type of music I own. How do you tell the difference?
I have a basic working knowledge of reading and counting music.
Confusing, isn’t it? I like to buy my practice music that tells me the speed and the type, i.e. reel 143, etc.
I believe slip jigs are in 5/8 time, treble jigs are 3/3, reels are 4/4 and I think hornpipes are 2/4 (not sure.) Once you get your steps down, you will be able to hear the steps in the music. My daughter is able to discern steps that are compatible with reels and hornpipes in modern music. Give it some time and you will too, I bet.
