my friends and i are arguing about the importance of jazz music. i have heard that some popular music genres today have been influenced or originated from jazz. what are some examples?

the truth is, nearly all genres of music you would find "popular" have origins in Jazz. Jazz led to Rock and Roll, which branched out into many other forms of music influencing the genres that are popular today. This is not to say, however, that Jazz is the sole influence, as the development of popular music is so complicated that it cannot be said to have one influence. In reality however, you would have a hard time making a case for jazz as a direct influence to popular music, as there is clearly a significant degree of separation, yet the influence is there, if only through the way in which Jazz led to the development of other styles of music that eventually led to that which is today considered popular. to credit Jazz as an influence on popular music, one must also credit by extension the music that led to the development of Jazz, that being Blues, Ragtime and a handful of other styles. To answer your question yes Jazz influenced popular music, but there is also significantly more to it that that simple statement.

Particularly ones with great rhythm. The kind’ve music I like is that with great rhythm like funk, various latin genres and just now I’m really starting to get into jazz. Can anyone suggest me good new and old jazz musicians that have great rhythmic music, and in particular latin jazz? and also some good jazz clubs in the DFW area?

ADVICE=

Go to a local family music store, talk to an older sales person (in their 50′s or 60′s), ask them about their favorite jazz bands, and research those band names!
ALSO, if you have an older grandparent, relative, or friend of your parents who listened to that kind
of music – ask them!

My grandpa just died in January…he loved music…My mom said that was all she listened to when she was a little girl…most of this advice CAME from my mom actually, lol.

I used to go to a really nice club that played this cool music that they called "acid jazz". I loved it. It might even be considered "world music". I am trying to find out the names of some artists who play this kind of music, preferably something I can download from Limewire. I like laid back but with "light energy", kind of jazz music. Something upbeat but laid back at the same time. I call it "vacation music" b/c when I listen to it, it is very relaxing.

I personally like Weather Report during the years Jaco Pastorius was playing bass for them. But some may argue that it’s not technically Acid Jazz. It’s still worth hearing since Jaco is still considered one of the most influential and genre altering bass players of our time.

DEFINITELY try Steamers. It’s an all ages restaurant/bar with live music every night. Just make sure you have called for reservations early so that you have a spot. The owner gives the people he knows better seating, but if it’s your first time he’ll probably place you near the back. (So leave good tips, haha) It’s usually pretty crowded- and even if you’re at the front you’ll be sitting at a table with a bunch of people you don’t know. But they have a lot of great musicians play and it’s totally worth it.

A common method for selling one’s music is through digital recording (these days). I’ve recorded my compositions onto a music CD via a Boss digital studio.

Pianist (new age?) David Nevue wrote "How to Successfully Market Your Music on The Internet" [or something very close to this title]. Give that a shot.
