Does anyone know the stereotypical Celtic music target audience (age, gender)?

January 172010

For media I have to design a music magazine, and I’ve chosen Celtic music as my genre. I need to design it for a specific audience but I’m not sure what it is.

Well my BF is a Scottish musician who has been in several Celtic bands, specifically traditional Irish and Scottish music, with some other Celtic nations stuff thrown in… NOT the new Loreena McKennit or Enya type or newagey stuff, or the Clancy Brothers drinking song type stuff either. From i see of the audiences they are greyhaired over 40, even over 50, old folkies, with some younger Ren Fair types thrown in. There are younger musicians from Canada and Ireland that are into it though, too. But generally, it looks like an older group, from what I’ve observed.

Pretty tough question, really. If you go to Irish fest, or gigs at Irish pubs, you’ll see a little of everything. The traditional stuff probably draws more to the 40-50+ crowd, but there are plenty of 20 and 30 somethings enjoying more contemporary Celtic music these days. If you’re trying to reach them all, I’d go with something like 35-55. Most of the folks I know who really enjoy it fall in that age range. Other than the likes of Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, or other rockers, generally speaking, the under 25 crowd has not seemed to acquire a taste for it yet.

New-Age Celtic music, Celtic Traditional music and Gaelic music are very popular in the USA and Canada because of the many Americans and Canadians who are descended from the so called Caltic countries. It is also very popular in Germany for some reason. I know from experience that many German people love Gaelic music, culture and language.
