What are some really good classical music pieces?
August 302009
Beethoven or Mozart? I’ve recently gotten into classical music and I enjoy these two. I also like Percy Granger. I find this type of music helps me to study…
Also, I love piano and think Chopin is excellent. Any recommendations on good piano pieces?
I love Mozart, but I love Beethoven much more than Mozart.

I see you are the person asking if you’re too old to play the piano.
Well…there are many composers but you should really listen to Alkan. His works are varying in quality but his creations like Concerto or Symphony for Solo Piano are amazing. He also has his "easy" pieces as well, like his Esquisses or Preludes.Although his music has been dubbed as "fiendishly" difficult don’t let that scare you!
Next would be…Henselt. His nickname was the "Northern Chopin".A very interesting composer although I would like to know why is he not played as much as Chopin. His Etudes are really lovely.
Next…Bella Bartok. If you think folk music was odd kind of thing, wait til you hear Bartok’s music. He essentially incorporated folk music into his music thus creating a "barbaric" kind of classical music.
I’m surprised no one said Bach.He truly is an incredible composer who has an extraordinary output for instruments in his time. His Preludes and fugues are amazing and also if you can appreciate the different kind of voices moving in and out seamlessly would be addicted to his music.
Also another notable composer would be Sergei Lyapunov. He is not very well known but his piano music is very lovely. His Etudes which copied Liszt’s style is really an amazing copy of it.
Liszt is one of the more difficult composers(but I don’t believe him to be more so than Alkan)and his output for piano is amazing. There are so many obscure pieces by Liszt.
Godowsky deserves a mention too I suppose. His 53 Studies on Chopin’s Etudes are VERY hard. There aren’t many people who play Godowsky as standard repertoire though.
Gershwin is also another composer who is worth looking into. His style incorporated Jazz into Classical and created a very unique sound.Listen to his Rhapsody in Blue.Jack Gibbons is a very good pianist,in fact he could recreate the way Gershwin played his music!
Rachmaninoff is a Russian composer and his style of composing music(although didn’t evolve much)is very rich. His music often created bell-like sounds from the piano.
Prokofiev is another Russian composer and his music is very personal. So much so that his music is INSTANTLY recognisable.
Right…there are the list of composers that I usually listen to.Although you asked for "good" classical music I don’t think its very "healthy" if you don’t discover music yourself which is why I gave composers instead so you can discover music instead of listening to the ones repeatedly we recommend.
