Just in case you’re wondering: I wrote this piece at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho not Moscow, Russia. I’ve never been to Russia, but I imagine the winters in Moscow, Idaho are like Russian winters in some ways.
I have been getting emails from teenagers who say that they love classical music and that people think there is something wrong with them for that. Personally, I find classical music fans enthusiastic about music and how music is made, so I am of the opinion that classical music is here to stay – so why not listen to it?
I studied the classical music of many composers while living in New York City in the mid 1990s. I spent hours at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts looking at scores and borrowing recordings.
I do feel that most classical musicians take themselves too seriously, but I can understand how much pressure they are under playing some of the best music ever composed.
One thing I will say about classical music is that it comes from European cultures which were cruel to “non-Western” countries during the time most classical music was written. I don’t like that part of classical music history, but it’s part of classical music.
The other thing I do not like about classical music is how it ignores the tones BETWEEN notes. Cultures in the Middle East, Asia and Africa all use the notes BETWEEN the notes that are on a piano keyboard. The bend, the slides, none of these nuances are available in almost all classical music.
I love all good music, no matter the genre.

I would totally agree- for years I’ve been marked as a ”geek” and a ”nerd” beacuse I listen to classical music, and I LOVE it. I’ve listened to it most of my life, and it’s pathetic how many people will say classical isn’t “real” music since there’s no lyrics.

Sorry to be a critic but I must say the first ten seconds or so are a bit painful, other than that it is VERY good. Moreover, I do believe you titled this as ‘springtime’ not winter, which you were speaking of on the information section.

music is an expression of feeling and emotion. not just how good a couple of notes sound together. i listen to all types of music including from classical to metal so just because you dont like a certain genre dosent mean its not considerd music

i totally agree with you, alyonyshcka1. i, too, am a teenager, and my friends are interested in some pretty disgusting noise that they call music as well. they like rap, and screamo, and i don’t understand how they think that that kind of ridiculous nonsense can be at all classified, in any universe visited by spock or any character from star trek, as good music.
