Do the Irish really like the Irish music we hear in America?

November 272009

Music like Flogging Molly, the Pogues… I hear it in America but I was wondering if they were really popular in Ireland. And what kind of music is popular in Ireland?

I think everyone generally enjoys listening to this music in the pub, but tehre are only a few people who really love it and would listen to it in their own home. Most popular music is the same as Britain or the US, all that stuff in the charts. But you have all styles of music, just like anywhere else in the world. Everyone has their own taste.

Oh wee another American that thinks we all tap dance in Celtic fashion and listen to "hiddldily I" music all day.

All music is popular in Ireland and Leprechauns are not real.

You’ll find the same spectrum of music that is found elsewhere. but folk and Irish traditional retain a strong following and is even guarded.

It goes in and out of fashion over the years -at the moment its fashionablity is on a low ebb. Traditional music fans, like say jazz and and classical fans however , are normally a bit smarter than the mainstream who in generally buy anything marketed to them, often nowadays, on a global scale.

The pogues etc would not be regarded as authentic by the purists as they are really a mix of pop, punk and other popular styles.

I’m not a fan of Flogging Molly or the Pogues, but that’s just my personal opinion. In Ireland we would not particularly consider them to be Irish bands/groups either.

Popular music here really varies person to person, but here is a good indicator as per the current charts:
