Kreisler – Liebeslied

September 132009

Title: Fritz Kreisler – Liebeslied

From Wikipedia;Fritz Kreisler (February 2, 1875 January 29, 1962) was an Austria-born violinist and composer; one of the most famous violinists of his day. He is noted for his sweet tone and expressive phrasing. Like many great violinists of his generation, he produced a characteristic sound, which was immediately recognizable as his own. Although he was a violinist of the Franco-Belgian school, his style is nonetheless reminiscent of the gemütlich (cozy) lifestyle of pre-war Vienna.

You’ll Love This! Classical Piano Music – “Springtime In Moscow”

“One of the most extraordinary pieces I have ever heard…written by the hand of one of the masters…”

Just in case you’re wondering: I wrote this piece at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho not Moscow, Russia. I’ve never been to Russia, but I imagine the winters in Moscow, Idaho are like Russian winters in some ways.

I have been getting emails from teenagers who say that they love classical music and that people think there is something wrong with them for that. Personally, I find classical music fans enthusiastic about music and how music is made, so I am of the opinion that classical music is here to stay – so why not listen to it?

I studied the classical music of many composers while living in New York City in the mid 1990s. I spent hours at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts looking at scores and borrowing recordings.

I do feel that most classical musicians take themselves too seriously, but I can understand how much pressure they are under playing some of the best music ever composed.

One thing I will say about classical music is that it comes from European cultures which were cruel to “non-Western” countries during the time most classical music was written. I don’t like that part of classical music history, but it’s part of classical music.

The other thing I do not like about classical music is how it ignores the tones BETWEEN notes. Cultures in the Middle East, Asia and Africa all use the notes BETWEEN the notes that are on a piano keyboard. The bend, the slides, none of these nuances are available in almost all classical music.

I love all good music, no matter the genre.

Ray Charles – Georgia On My Mind

August 172009

Ray Charles was one of the true pioneers of soul music. Born in Georgia in 1930 he was one of the first performers to mix gospel, R & B and jazz to create a new form of black pop music that would come to be known as soul. His voice and delivery were strikingly different and instantly recognisable. He had his first hits in the early 50′s and was still hitting the charts into the 21st century. His death in June 2004 from liver disease was front page news around the world.
This concert was filmed at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 19, 1997 and features Ray Charles and his orchestra, led by sax player Al Jackson, and of course The Raelettes.
The full performance is available on the Eagle Vision DVD “Live at Montreux 1997″, out now.
